Use the official lookup
PSA provides a certification verification tool. Enter the number on the holder at the official website rather than relying only on a screenshot supplied by someone else.
Compare the details
Check the returned card description against the label and the item you are viewing. Look at the set, card name, number and grade. If the record includes photographs, compare those as well.
Keep the limits in view
A matching number is one part of your research. It does not independently establish the identity of a seller, the ownership of an item or whether a photographed holder is the one you will receive. Resolve mismatches before making a decision.
Keep your own notes
Save the listing, the lookup date and the questions you asked. Avoid putting private account information into a public message or site search.
Compare the identity in several places
Write down the card description from the listing, the holder and the official lookup result. Compare the set or issue, language, variation and grade where those fields are available. A description that is merely similar can still refer to a different item. If a photograph is too small to read, ask for a clearer view before deciding that the records agree.
Keep a record of what you actually checked
Save the date of the lookup and the photographs supplied for the transaction. Note any missing view rather than filling the gap with an assumption. This creates a useful trail if a description later changes. A matching certification entry is one piece of evidence; PSA itself warns that genuine certification numbers can appear on counterfeit inserts.
- Record the official lookup URL and check date.
- Compare readable images of the front and back.
- Write down unresolved differences before contacting the seller.
Know when to leave a question open
If the holder, item or photographs do not match the record, ask a specific question and keep the response. Do not invent an explanation for the mismatch because the price looks appealing. When the available evidence is insufficient, you can postpone the decision or seek advice from the appropriate current provider. The lookup cannot inspect the physical object on your behalf.
