Retailers have received descriptions and images of four new Pokémon TCG products, including V promo card debuts for Pokémon Sword & Shield favourites Rillaboom, Cinderace, Inteleon and Toxtricity!
With the Pokémon Sword & Shield base set releasing on February 7th 2020, it was only to be expected there would be a bunch of new tins and collection boxes released shortly after, featuring more Gen 8 Pokémon.
The first of these big releases will be our first tins of the Sword & Shield era, the "Galar Partners Tin" will feature V promo cards of first partner evolutions Rillaboom, Cinderace and Inteleon.
As the norm with Pokémon TCG tins, each will contain likely two booster packs from the newest set, and 1-2 random others from previous 2-3 years. The Galar Partners Tins will be available worldwide on February 27, 2020
While these Rillaboom V, Cinderace V, or Inteleon V cards may be underwhelming from a competitive (tournament) perspective, many fans and collectors will enjoy these SWSH (Sword & Shield) black star promos as they all very striking and don't have too much text obscuring the Pokémon themselves.
What makes these tins more interesting than previous releases, is that for the first time in recent years, the UK (and possibly Europe, not confirmed yet) will be receiving them as the traditional Pokémon tin style, where as the USA (and likely the rest of North America) release features the same promos but in the style of the Tag Team tins seen in the past year.
The reason for these changes are unknown, potentially to reduce the shipping/printing costs for overseas export. I myself am based in the UK and really enjoyed the larger and more decorative style of the tins we got since Team Up, and I'm not overly excited to see the return of the old style of tins.
Also announced this week was the Toxtricity V Box. As with the EX & GX collection boxes we are used to from the past few years, this box will also contain four boosters (likely two Sword & Shield, image is a placeholder) alongside the Toxtricity V promo and the jumbo of the same Pokémon.
Alongside the three tin promos mentioned above, Toxtricity V isn't the strongest card for players of the TCG, but many Sword & Shield fans will appreciate one of their favourite new Pokémon getting a promo card straight away. The Toxtricity V Box will be available worldwide on February 27, 2020.
These promos now pretty much confirm that all Pokémon V cards will be big basics, as all four are evolution Pokémon in the Sword & Shield video game. This marks the biggest change from Pokémon GX cards, as many of them (especially from the first eight sets) were evolution Pokémon that needed to be evolved. This makes them a lot more similar to EX cards from the XY series as they were mostly big basic Pokémon also.
These first bunch of promos seem underwhelming from a player's perspective, but often this is the case for products released around the time of a base set being launched. Collectors and Sword & Shield fans will still love them I'm sure!
