Japan's newest set, Alter Genesis (SM12) releases this weekend and features 95 cards plus secret rares. The star of the show has to be the alternate art Arceus & Dialga & Palgia-GX Tag Team card, as well as the full art Supporter Tag Team cards. Let's take a closer look at the set!
Starting with the elephant in the room, or in this case, the statue. Many thought that Pokémon couldn't top the stained glass Articuno & Zapdos & Moltres-GX card, but they definitely did with this alternate art Arceus & Dialga & Palgia-GX card.
Featuring the iconic Gen 4 legendaries alongside the “Pokémon god” Arceus, all in statue forms, this card stands alongside many other such iconic Tag Team and other modern arts of previous years. It also holds up to many of Kouki Saitou early works, including Crystal Charizard from Skyridge, and the Dark Slowking from EX Team Rocket Returns.
Arceus & Dialga & Palgia-GX also has some pretty impressive attacks including it's GX attack which permanently increases your damage by 30 throughout the game. It has tons of potential so both players and collectors alike will be keen to get their hands on this card, alongside the other three versions (regular, full art and rainbow) which will all likely release in our November set, Cosmic Eclipse.
The other huge draw from Alter Genesis is the inclusion of our first Tag Team Supporter cards featuring popular and iconic Pokémon trainers teaming up on the same card for the first time in the game's history. Players will also be excited, as like with the Tag Team GX cards, they have an additional effect that you can trigger to make the card more powerful.
In particular the Red & Blue and Cynthia & Caitlin Tag Team cards will undoubtedly be popular especially among full art Supporter collectors. It's extremely relieving to see how beautiful these Tag Team Supporters are, especially after the disappointing stock artwork used for the regular art ones.
As Alter Gensis is the last main Japanese set before we get the huge reprint set, High Class Pack 2019 (which is similar to The Best of XY set we got in 2017), it's unlikely we will see many more Tag Team Supporters (or Tag Team cards in general) released, so these are definitely a fitting tribute to a block of cards which have mostly been popular with the Pokémon fan base.
Speaking of Tag Teams, we also get to see the alternate versions of Mega Lopunny & Jigglypuff-GX and Naganadel & Guzzlord-GX. It is quite strange to see some of these Pokémon receive Tag Team cards when many more iconic Pokémon, especially popular legendary Pokémon like Lugia, Ho-Oh, Groudon and Kyogre, didn't receive Tag Team cards. However I must say these cards, especially the alternate art Naganadel & Guzzlord-GX, look fantastic and will make excellent additions to anyone's collection.
Alter Genesis (SM12) releases on September 6th 2019 and is one of the last main sets in Japan before they get their first Sword & Shield set later in the year.
